As a young researcher in the Forties, Dr. Pincus' first notable achievement was becoming the first scientist to induce parthenogenesis - or virgin birth - in mammals#The first clinical trials of an early version of the Pill were carried out by Dr. Pincus and his colleagues Dr. John Rock and Dr. M. C. Chang in 1954. The Pill became publicly available in the US in 1960 and in Britain the following year#By 1975 the Pill was Britain's favourite method of birth control, used by 36 per cent of single women and 30 per cent of married and/or divorced women#In 1977, use of the Pill began to decline sharply following reports of adverse side-effects#In 1963 the International Planned Parenthood Federation formed an Oral Advisory Group and Pincus became its first chairman#As well as attending Cornell and Harvard Universities, in the Twenties Pincus also studied at Cambridge University and the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin#The Pill received its field trials during the late Fifties in Puerto Rico and Haiti#At the time of his death in 1967, Pincus and Chang were developing the morning-after pill. Today, this pill is widely available - if taken within 72 hours of having sex, it prevents pregnancy#Around 80 million women across the world use the Pill#The Pill was introduced in 1960. By 1962, two million American women were using it#Some commentators blamed the Pill for encouraging youngsters to have sex. Others argued that, like it or not, the sexual urge was already present in young people, and the Pill merely provided the means to prevent causing human tragedies
